Recently, I came home after catching a movie with a friend of mine at around 10pm. My parents asked me who I went out with. I was about to reply "a friend I know"..when a funny idea struck me...I decided to reply that I had went out with a guy I liked...
AND you should have seen the looks on their faces. Horror. Utter horror.
Laughing inwardly to myself, I retreated for bed.
The next morning( a weekend alas), I found myself interrogated by my parents. They wanted to know what I meant by "a guy I liked" and more importantly.."was I gay?"
After my explanation (it was a joke), they breathed a DEEP sigh of relief. Upon asking them why they seemed so uptight over this, it was then I realized how deeply they feared homosexuals and how they thought that gays were so..."unnatural"...
Unnatural? Gays are unnatural?
A behavior that is prevalent throughout the animal kingdom unnatural?
And what IS natural anyway? Is wearing clothes natural? Do any other animal species do that? Is watching TV natural? Hell, is drawing and painting even natural?
I've heard critiques argue. Oh, what good does being homosexual serves? The couple won't reproduce. It's an obviously redundant behavior and an abnormality upon mother nature.
But isn't art redundant too? Does it help our survival in any way? Aren't the many things that humans do redundant too?
But the critiques go on. But it's obscene! A man on man (or woman on woman)..Ugghhh! The travesty!
But why should it concern you? Are 2 guys kissing in front your face? If so, you have the right to be disgusted. You have the freedom to say: "I feel uncomfortable. Please do it somewhere else." Hell, it's also inappropriate for a straight couple to make out in public. But either than that, what right do you have to restrict one's freedom of sexuality? What would it do to you anyway? Just because somehow you can't bend around the fact that 2 humans of the same gender CAN fall in love, what right do you have to discriminate them?
Well..the country I live in..sad to say..is homophobic. They are separated or even exempted from military service. Because in the eyes of the army, homosexuality is a MEDICAL DISEASE.

The public too, are wary of them. "Gay" is a taboo word. To be gay...it's a god damned tragedy to not just you, but your whole family. It's a dishonor of the greatest magnitude.
And I know the mindset. Since young, in the few times my parents discussed the topic of homosexuality, I was told it's a really "bad thing". Sexual education in my country does not cover the topic at all. So what else did we think the gays as? Abnormalities of course. "The rejects of society" of course. If it wasn't for the internet and the few books I could get on the topic, I'd probably be still homophobic now.
Even when discussing this with my friends, most shared the same homophobic views as my parents do. As for the few who confided sympathy..well..they were careful not to display it. And who can blame them? It's not worth getting the blacklist. A blacklist that can ruin all prospects of employment. A blacklist that degrades you to a 2nd class citizen.
And to end of my rant (phew..that looks long!), I have to say these words: I'm not gay. But that doesn't stop me from sympathizing with a fellow human being.
